Project ‘A Refugee Story’

OpenEurope, together with 5 other partners from Greece, Turkey,  Romania, Italy, and Georgia, will take part in the project entitled ‘A Refugee Story’ which will be held in the area of Thessaloniki for three months, from 15-9-2016 to 30-11-2016 in the framework of the programme Erasmus+ Youth Mobility. The Youth Exchange will take place in this same city from 21-09-2016 to 29-09-2017 and 42 youngsters from the above mentioned countries, students of schools and universities of both sexes plus 1 youth leader from each country, will participate in the activities involved in it.

All the activities that will be carried out are related to the interests of young people and pulse of society. Through exrefugeesperiential methods, young people will communicate in different ways (music, songs, pictures, words, etc.) The refugee stories will sensitize the restless youthful soul, making it receptive to social callings. The participants, through playful ways, will be able to discover themselves and the forces hiden within. They will be divided into mixed inconsistent teams and play simulation games, role-playing, pantomimes… so that through dramatized stories, known and unknown, they are able to understand each culture and the situation of these groups of people. They will meet experts who can give them incentives to express their narrative skills effectively. Also, visiting the refugee centre will create the conditions to make them realise that solidarity becomes indispensable factor of coexistence; and visiting a museum of the city will give them the opportunity to become acquainted with the History. The methodology that will be used in non-formal learning will be free discussion, board games and theatrical and musical performances, as well as sports activities.

The results of the participation will be improving their the ability of opening to others, the development of critical thinking, the intercultural perspective, the practice of a foreign language, the possibility of belonging to a group, the development of creativity and organizational capacity. The impact of such a programme will be high both for themselves and for smaller communities that slowly will be like a yeast which increases the interest of the wider society and its participation in joint European actions. The long-term benefits will be the participation through dissemination to more young people for programmes of national and European and why not… global activities.
